SATAN DRIVES TO WORK

  Idle Hands

24 April 2001

11:43 AM: Just don't know what to do with myself Today. Everything is working, it's weird.

So, no special reason for missing yesterday, just sort of forgot. Slept late, got to work, worked, ate donuts, went to bar to lend Sean the tape of last week's Buffy, came home, zzzz. Didn't end up doing anything this weekend particularly, other than Saul's birthday at the bar. Which only made me realize that it's been a while since I spent a substantial block of time there, not such a bad thing. Should go have coffee now. And bagel, mmm.

Weekend Media Report: Did not go see Richard Buckner or Arab Strap because of laziness. Did, however, read new Stephen King book, Dreamcatcher. Quite gross. Fun read, wouldn't call it one of his best; reminded me of Insomnia.

Also read Perdido Street Station by China Mieville, which I got from the book club just because it looked odd. Excellent stuff - strange mix of genres, kind of goth/punk/fantasy with a big hit of urban decay. He mentions Mervyn Peake in his dedication, and that kind of Gormenghast flavor definitely shows. Nice to read a work in this genre where the characters are just people, and not archetypes. And to have a story where things go wrong and don't get better.

Willfully blind self-indulgent nebbish or amusingly quirky old coot? And how bout that local sports team? Discuss among yourselves.

All names are fake, most places are real, the author is definitely unreliable but it's all in good fun. Yep.
