SATAN DRIVES TO WORK

  Och Aye! Ow.

31 January 2000

5:34 PM: Heh! Now this is truly random - Potatoe.Com is the Hot Link of the Week at Nessie on the Net!, "the official home of the Loch Ness Monster on the Web." I watched for a while, but I didn't see anything. Probably just cold, poor wee monster that it is.

7:05: New Hampshire primary tomorrow. Nothing all that unexpected likely. Never know, though. President Bauer. Jihad. Mandatory heat-sealed Mormon-style underwear for unmarried people. Steve & Edie, big comeback. Could happen.

Weekend Media Report: Some small progress, though not really in the path I'd intended. Saturday, saw The Mission, new Hong Kong actioner from Johnny To, who I don't really know that much about but now want to. Want To. Ha ha. Get it get it? Thud. Anyway, nice film, kind of quiet as films about lots of people shooting each other go. Had Anthony Wong, who was the bad guy in Executioners (the Heroic Trio sequel) and has boy howdy been in some movies with some silly-ass names.

That was playing with Run Lola Run. I think Lana described this pretty well when she said that it'd be a perfect party movie. You don't really have to pay attention, you can just listen to the grovie soundtrack and watch the nice colors. "My hair is red, my butt is green, my shoes are black." It's fun. Wasn't on my list, though. Dang it. My time is finite on this planet.

Sunday, speaking of questionable uses of finite time, Penny and I showed up early to the forever-selling-out Metreon, our new downtown Sony-branded, Loews-owned multiplex, in order to get tickets for Girl, Interrupted later, and the only thing that was playing that I hadn't seen was Stuart Little. Now, I like Geena Davis probably a bit more than the next fellow, and I have been known to enjoy children's films at the drop of a pointed hat. But you know, it's cute, yes very nice, little mouse, wears clothes, grimaces a lot, cat has one of those cute New York attitudes, house is funny, relatives are kind of odd... I've just seen this all before. Eh. If I hadn't really wanted to be watching great green glowing globby things instead, I might have liked it more.

So that took up some time. We went through the Sony store and drooled on some Vaios. Looked at the Glasstron movie glasses, which were OK but didn't really fit human faces, and are we suprised by this? No.

Then Girl, Interrupted. Story a little too neat, shock. Winona Ryder is cute and disturbed and earnest, and was playing peek-a-boo with a nightie again, which I think is evidence of something. Angelina Jolie reminded me of Lauren, only way more scary. Vampire Lauren. For me, she really dominated the picture, which made it a little frustrating since we only know what Ryder's character saw of her. Lana and her newly-minted husband Eddie saw it as well; they had both read the book first, and they were a lot more annoyed by it. Saul thought it was very earnest, and Penny couldn't remember most of it as soon as it was over. So I think our combined score was "OK".

Last night Sarah came by, which was good because I was a little worried about her, but bad because it was 2:30 AM and she was there until 4 or so. Which in itself wouldn't normally be that bad except I got paged at 8. And that was only bad because I fell asleep afterwards and didn't wake up until 2:30 PM. Which is bad because... well, I'm supposed to show up for work and stuff.

I think I might be getting an attitude about this place. Oh well, at least I didn't go in at 2 AM to do software installations like some very crazy people I know and am very glad to not be sharing machines with. Now I have to go fuck around with Apache installations. Rah. Work, it's all neat and stuff.

Willfully blind self-indulgent nebbish or amusingly quirky old coot? And how bout that local sports team? Discuss among yourselves.

All names are fake, most places are real, the author is definitely unreliable but it's all in good fun. Yep.
