SF ATMs by tommie on 1999-11-02 20:58:07

Hey, one thing on the news that got my attention was that the people in the Free State of San Franscisco outlawed ATM fees yesterday. I'm anxious to know how the financial institutions will respond. If any of you live there (I know at least one of you do!) please keep me apprised.

Oh, the banks immediately filed suit to block it. And the city will countersue. The real point is to start a plague of these referendums, along with the city laws and regulations that have been passed elsewhere, so that eventually every city and town in the country is telling the banks to fuck off. then maybe they'll just back down.

AHA! The Bank of America and Wells Fargo are refusing ATM service to noncustomers in Santa Monica... they are threatening to do the same in SF unless the new law is reversed. I'll bet you guys are plenty sorry now!

OK. I apologise for bringing this back to the attention, as it was almost 2 years ago, but why shouldn't I..... We're talking ATM as in a cashpoint, right? Are your fees higher than the traditional 'British' 1%? Of course, it rightly made news, but is it such an important matter that suing and countersuing are relevant? Maybe I'm missing something... I dunno.

No, see this is California, importance and lawsuits are completely unrelated concepts.

  Ah, OK. Fair enough.
