Austin Texans are celebrating, I'm one of them! by JohnnyG on 2004-07-25 11:53:32

Just got back from the Fox & Hound pub where a celebration for the achievement of Lance Armstrong has concluded. My company is a big sponsor of the Armstrong foundation. I am simply a fan of Lance. I must say that in the field of sports I have never considered cycling to be anywhere near the top of my focus and attention. Footbal/basketball/baseball and yes even soccer ranked above cycling. Other than Lance and the past 6 years Tour de France I still rank cycling quite low. Visiting with folks who are bald from chemotherapy during my nightly excursions to the Fox & Hound over the past weeks has made me realize that overcoming cancer is a sport in itself. From what these cancer victims endure I have a greater appreciation of suffering and hope and either winning or losing a battle. It's motivational to this healthy young man! Anyway, I completed the personal downing of 2 bottles of Perrier-Jouet champaigne this afternoon cheering Lance and I wanted to write something before I take a nap to sleep it off. Lance is not perfect but he is a tremendous athlete who overcame terrible odds to achieve his victory. Much respect, much love to him, his fantastic foundation and the comfort it gives cancer sufferers and my fellow Austinites who are some of the best people in the world to celebrate with--->Cheers!

Lance is a hero and no drugs to help him perform were detected in his piss like so many shitty cheaters this year and before. He gets drug tested for all kinds of crap even drugs that mask other drugs and they keep his blood for a lifetime so when detection methods improve over the years they retest and see if there really is something in his red goo that cheated him forward to victory. That cancer is bad stuff too. He be a tough dude getting over that ball cancer and everything.

I helped create the wagon the band now sits atop. I became a fan of basketball when the Bulls employed Michael Jordan. You would only need watch one performance of Michael to become a fan of his and the sport. Lance kicked ass.

A couple of nights ago, before I went to bed, I wrote a 500 word or so retort, simply highlighting my frustration of these 'purists' of fandom. (Note here, Johnny, that I am on your side - you can support who you want when you want for me) Does it matter how long you've been following a certain person/team? Or is judging people (and eschewing those who do not fit a certain timescale) by that criterion a way of trying to ensure a level of reflected glory, and therefore ultimately selfish? I think it is. To that end, it strictly means that only people present at the genesis of anything have the right to claim support of it through time - and where does that leave people who couldn't have been there (Youngsters, non-nationals, all sorts).

Put simply, who is this guy to come on and accuse Potatoe-ers of being band-wagon jumpers in
a) Ignorance, and
b) A perfect example of the mind-set I have (vaguely) outlined above.

I read one of Auden's poems the other night. I'm now a huge fan of poetry. Thanks Kid, I'm happy to have your support! Would enjoy reading the 500 word retort. Its beauty might compare to a lovely French resort...............this is what fanaticism does to an adult human male-->BEWARE.
