Hmm. Sounds like Bill went to college, after all these years.
So, a mandrake root is forked, something like a crotch. And to "get with child" such a thing is obviously impossible. Which is, of course, the point, as the rest of the poem (and even that first verse) clearly shows. But the "go fuck a stick" remark is due to an English prof of mine. While both formulations are funny, Donne's is certainly more elegant.
But, you have me pegged right. I actually prefer the second form.
