It looks different under different browsers and different OS's. I usually get a backward slash, actually. I think it is some oddity of trying to spiff up the plain text. The funny thing is, whatever script it is actually forms the curly quotes and asterisks correctly, but leaves in the slash. It does not seem to interfere with ordinary HTML tags like this bolding, though.
