parent: 1980's. Why?
Re: 1980's. Why? by Amelia on 2000-04-06 20:10:14
Not only were men wearing makeup in the '70s, flares were pretty much out in the '80s. I quite lucidly remember purchasing my last pair in 1978. Well, my last pair until 1997, but that is a different story. Beards were pretty much a '70s thing, too, until the resurgence of the goatee in the mid '90s.
The main thing about the '80s, stylistically speaking, was the rise of cable and especially MTV and ESPN. This was somehow related to the ascendence of Australian popular culture in the international scene (who could forget A Flock of Seagulls and Crocodile Dundee?) as well as that whole debacle of the 1984 Olympics, held in Los Angeles and styled in the colors of a gelateria rather than those of the host country.
Of course, we in New York are still atoning for that moment of showing the world our best aqua, peach, and mulberry selves by wearing nothing but black for the next decade. It does make packing for trips a lot easier, though.
